The tree of life, not so common in mosques, this one is a unique Seljuk Style, the oldest mosque in Edirne...quite Shamanistic I would say...L’arbre de vie, pas très courant dans les mosquées, celui-ci est unique dans le style Seljuk, la mosquée la plus ancienne d’Edirne….peut-être pas si éloigné du chamanisme.

Pehlivan:Turkish oil wrestler

Last week we went on a road trip to Edirne just 220 kms away from Istanbul ,to attend the annual 650'th Kırkpınar Wrestling festival. The idea came from a friend (ilkergurer.blogspot.com) who wanted to work on his personal photography project on portraits of Turkish oil wrestlers. While he took his portraits, we have been helping him with assisting the people and meanwhile I took a few photos and videos of mine too.

I was pretty amused to see that this famous ancient sport was carried out carefully with great interest and passion among its' young followers. All of the pehlivans whom I asked "why are you Pehlivan?" answered pretty much the same, they said: "because this is my grand father's sport". One can easily realize, the traditional implications this sport carries and how it evokes feelings of respect and commitment among the peers. Also unlike common wrestling, the tournament can only be won by having control of eachothers lederhosen (called kisbet, made of calfskin) by putting the arm through the latter's kisbet, creating an interest scene much different then any wrestling tournament.

Pehlivan : le lutteur imprégné d’huile – Eda résume son court séjour à Edirne.

« La semaine dernière nous sommes allés à Edirne à 220 km d’Istanbul pour assister au 650^ème festival de Lutte Kırkpınar. L’idée venait de mon ami (ilkergurer.blogspot.com) qui voulait travailler sur un projet personnel de portraits des lutteurs turcs imprégnés d’huile. Pendant qu’il prenait ses photos nous l’avons aidé et ce faisant je prenais mes propres clichés.

J’étais étonnée de voir à quel point ce sport populaire traditionnel était attentivement suivi avec passion par de jeunes adeptes. Tous les Pehlivans à qui j’ai demandé la raison pour faire ce sport m’ont répondu que ‘c’était le sport que pratiquait leur grand-père’. On peut facilement imaginer les valeurs traditionnelles que ce sport transmet et l’importance du sentiment de respect et d’engagement parmi ses pairs. Aussi se distinguant des autres sports de lutte, ce tournoi ne peut être remporté qu’en réussissant à attraper la culotte de peau (appelée kisbet, faite en peau de veau) de l’adversaire ce qui crée des scènes de lutte bien différentes de celles qu’on voit habituellement.
