Public march for Mathew and Hunter

Prime Minister Edward Natapei has announced in Parliament that the Government and Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs will be organizing a solidarity march on Saturday for the two islands of Matthew and Hunter.
]…] “I wish to assure the people of Vanuatu that the two islands are always part of Vanuatu.
“We requested a dialogue with the President of France (Nicholas Sarkozy) but that did not happen,” the Vanuatu Prime Minister said. Natapei invited everyone in Port Vila and Efate to join in the solidarity march to show the region and the world Vanuatu’s stand on the two islands.

“I invite everyone that recognizes the two islands belong to us (Vanuatu) to join in the march.
The diplomatic standoff between Vanuatu and France is a 30-year old story is still unresolved while both claim that the two islands belong to their respective sovereign territory.
]…]Geographically the two islands are located on the same continental shelf as Vanuatu while the territory of France is separated by a trench that separates Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
Culturally the people of Aneityum, the southern-most inhabited island of Vanuatu have cultural connections to the islands that oral evidence shows that it dates back to pre-European contact in the Pacific.
But France has maintained that the two islands are under its jurisdiction.

Le premier ministre Edward Natapei a annoncé au Parlement que le Gouvernement et le Conseil National Malvatumauri des chefs organiseront une marche de solidarité samedi 27 novembre pour les deux îles Mathew et Hunter.
]…] « Je souhaite réaffirmer à la population des Vanuatu que les deux îles font toujours partie du territoire des Vanuatu. »
« Nous avons demandé au Président français Nicolas Sarkozy une amorce de dialogue qui est restée lettre morte, » dit le Premier Ministre. Natapei a invité tous les habitants de Port Vila et Efate à rejoindre la marche de solidarité pour montrer que la région et le pays Vanuatu est du côté des deux îles. « J’invite chaque personne qui reconnaît que les deux îles appartiennent au Vanuatu à rejoindre la marche. »
L’impasse diplomatique dans lequel se trouve les Vanuatu et la France date d’une trentaine d’années alors que les deux proclament les îles comme appartenant à leur territoire souverain.

]…] Géographiquement les deux îles sont situées sur le même plateau continental que les Vanuatu alors que la France en est éloignée par une fosse qui sépare les Vanuatu de la Nouvelle Calédonie. Culturellement les gens de Aneityum, la partie sud la plus peuplée des Vanuatu sont liées culturellement à ces îles comme l’attestent les preuves orales datant d’avant le contact des gens du Pacifique avec l’Europe. Mais la France a gardé les deux îles sous sa juridiction.
